History of Baccarat

One of the most popular and intriguing online casino games is Baccarat. A card game, famed for its simplicity and excitement, baccarat has grown in popularity to become, if not quite as popular as its sister game blackjack, definitely one of the next popular games and this popularity has been transferred easily into the realm of internet casinos. This is not to say however, that Baccarat only entered the mainstream in the formative years of internet gaming. Baccarat has a long and established history both in Europe and in the United States.

It is thought by some (it must be said, the more romantic of casino historians) that Baccarat is based on the mystical story of an Etruscan Virgin who in one story was made to roll a nine sided dice. If the number rolled was 5 or less she would be thrown into the sea to drown. If the dice landed on 6 or 7 she would be allowed to live normal life. If, however the dice was a 8 or 9 then the virgin would become a high priestess. This story mirrors the rules of baccarat, although baccarat is of course played with cards and the stakes are not quite as high!

A game that resembles the game we now know as baccarat closely was apparently developed by French noblemen who popularised a game known as Chemin de Fer, still the baccarat variant played today in the majority of casinos throughout Europe and one available on most reputable online casinos. In Chemin de Fer, one of the players has to act as the bank and so having a large bankroll is one of the essential parts of Chemin de Fer, which is why it has developed so well as a casino game. A turning point in contemporary times for Baccarat was when James Bond movie Casino Royale was released in the 1960s. The plot of the film is about a game of baccarat between Bond and his nemesis Le Chiffre. This mention of Baccarat in popular culture did wonders for the game and helped it get to the lofty position in the mind of casino goers that it holds to this day. When the Bingo Clubs Closed Down

In this article we will examine some of the social effects of the closure of bingo halls, particularly on their members and the people who worked in the clubs.

Following the 2007 smoking ban, bingo clubs went into a sharp decline. Attendances nose dived, profits tumbled, many clubs were forced to close their doors and the impact was to

leave many people bereft.

The importance of bingo clubs should not be underestimated. For many, bingo was the most important and possibly the only leisure activity away from home. Although the attraction of

winning money was important, the long term motivation was the associated social interactions and the feeling of belonging. The clubs were key in providing a network of friends and

support, for both members and workers. Bingo halls were also important to the over sixties and provided an opportunity for them to maintain an active mind.

Although as one club closed some members and employees were able to find another, a large number were forced to give up bingo entirely and the impact was a huge reduction in

their quality of life. Some sociologists have even attributed the breakdown of local communities to the closure of their bingo clubs.

Overall, the closures have meant far more than the loss of entertainment and a pastime especially in small and rural communities. It has also meant that a unique social support

network that had been extremely important to women past the retirement age has been lost. The overall result was a detrimental impact on both the mental and physical wellbeing of

these people particularly in the absence of any other form of socialisation.

To some extent and in certain regions a new type of super bingo club has been introduced that is attracting new audiences, and of course there is online bingo which are open 24/7 also has a support and socialising element, but it was a very sad day when the local bingo halls closed down.
